President's Message: February 2025

Dear Fellow Landscape Architecture Professionals,

Before diving into this month’s updates, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the recent tragic aviation accidents that have impacted our region and beyond. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by these heartbreaking events.

Supporting the Next Generation

February is filled with opportunities to support and engage the future of our profession—our students. Maryland is fortunate to have two strong landscape architecture programs at the University of Maryland (UMD) and Morgan State University (MSU), and we are committed to fostering their growth.

This evening, we are excited to host an event at MSU, and in the coming weeks, we look forward to supporting UMD’s Portfolio Review & Happy Hour. I encourage you to attend and connect with the next generation of landscape architects.

We’re also bringing back our annual Job Shadow Week, an invaluable opportunity to invite students into your offices to gain real-world insights into our profession. If your haven’t signed up yet, I highly encourage you to participate. You can read about last year’s success in EMBARK IX.

Additionally, our Student Outreach Committee has launched a new Mentorship Program to connect students with professionals as they transition into their careers. We’re seeking mentors from the MD/DC region—please consider signing up to support aspiring landscape architects.

Thank you to our committee chairs Javiera Diaz-Ortiz and Micaela Ada for leading these initiatives!

Advocacy & Professional Development

Be sure to join us for an upcoming Lunchtime Learn Webinar featuring our chapter’s political advisor, Jack Neil. We’ll discuss the latest legislative developments and advocacy opportunities for our profession. Advocacy is for everyone, and we hope this session inspires more members to get involved. More details are included in the newsletter below.

Thank You to Our Sponsors

We’re grateful to our returning and new chapter sponsors and Circle of Support members, including Country Casual Teak, Fountain Craft, Vectorworks, Mahan Rykiel, Campion Hruby, Jonathan Ceci Landscape Architects, and many more.

Your generous support strengthens our mission to empower Maryland’s landscape architects. If you’re interested in sponsoring Maryland ASLA, please check out our website for sponsorship opportunities or reach out to me and our Sponsorship Chair, Ali Salimian.

Final Reminder: Submit Your Awards Entries!

The deadline to submit your award-winning work is February 21—don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your projects!

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to seeing you at our events soon.

Sincerely,

Michael Pullano, PLA, ASLA
