Trustee's Letter: January 2025

I want to thank the board for the opportunity to serve as Trustee of the Maryland Chapter during this interim period and would like to introduce myself to the membership. I have been a member of the Maryland Chapter since the late 1990’s. I have served a variety of board and committee positions over the years, including being president during the 2003-2004 period. I look forward to serving in this position as a way to give back to the profession and assist with the multitude of programs that the chapter offers.

As I look back at our profession over the years here in Maryland, I am amazed by the versatility and the breath of work that our members and firms possess. Landscape Architecture projects impact almost every Maryland (and beyond) resident in positive and influential ways. Our products and processes create safe and efficient use of spaces, promote mental health, build natural and resilient ecosystems and improve communities for better live work and play.

We have a talented pool of volunteers at the board and committee level, as well as many individual members, that help guide programs and activities within our chapter. It Is through this leadership of our board that makes our chapter such a strong profession and one of the most accomplished chapters in the area. All of the chapter officers as welcoming and eager to assist our members and I look forward to helping in their efforts. We could not accomplish so much, without the help of our many affiliate and firm sponsors. We are truly grateful for their collaboration and support throughout the years.

ASLA National is encouraging chapters and their members to consider making a recurring donation to the newly established Founders Club to help support efforts aimed at awareness, education, awards, diversity, research, and much more. At the local level, the Maryland Chapter has been focused on sustaining our robust schedule of programs and to building a surplus fund for advocacy efforts that may be needed to protect and promote landscape architecture in Maryland, and thus have elected not to begin a recurring contribution at this time. However, I would like to make a plea to our members to consider an individual contribution to the Founders Club to support the important work of ASLA.

There have been so many members who have helped guide and influence me in my professional and personal life throughout the years. I am eternally grateful to these members and hope that I can give back by offering my guidance throughout this next year. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance to you in any way.  I look forward to working with you over the next year.

Vernon Hustead, ASLA
